Stumbling upon a fresh food marketplace

Today I did a walkabout on my own, meandering through the streets, and I stumbled upon this market. It was absolutely awesome. Rows of the freshest seafood I have ever seen, most of which were still alive, splashing about in tubs and buckets. In an alley outside the seafood market there were live chickens, ducks, and various other fowl contained tightly in wire cages, awaiting the swift swing of a cleaver to their necks, upon purchase by a passer by. Stacks of fresh eggs were at one stand, and open sacks of various legumes, peas, beans at another. The fresh produce area featured beautiful fresh vegetables. A couple of the women tried to hand me a basket to buy onions and carrots. I just smiled, shook my head politely and walked on. The meat section was another awe-inspiring area, legs and heads still attached, yet appetizing because of the freshness. I felt strangely comfortable roaming through the market, taking the odd snapshot and trying not to look too much like a tourist (ah, who am I kidding!?). I will wander down that way again, and only wish I could be invisible so as to linger and observe for a longer period of time. It is a thrill to stumble upon the more authentically Chinese nooks and crannies in this busy city.

  1. The curing meats stand is very curious indeed! I would want to try a nibble of each. The market, what a fantastic find. You're such a good writer too, Helena...you paint such a vivid picture of your surroundings. And the flowering trees, oh my! This is a lovely trip I'm having (vicariously!) through you. Heehee! xoxo (Drumming up work too? A-mazing. You go girl.)

    1. It is much neater and cleaner here than I expected as well. We always hear how dirty China is but I don't find it that way at all. Maybe when I start travelling to smaller places.
